GRAVITATE

Based on the simple concept of layering grids of circles on one another. The varying grid sizes, circle sizes, positions and colours combine to create interesting dithering effects.

About Me

Hi, I'm 0xbenj. I'm a coder, generative artist and photographer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.I've been building enterprise-level software for 24 years in areas such as energy utilities, billing management, customer care and financial services.My art practice is my creative, right-brained balance to my otherwise analytical, left-brained 9-to-5 work. I make art under a pseudonym as it allows me freedom to take creative risks I might otherwise not feel able to.I used to run a coffee business. I have an unnecessarily complicated daily coffee ritual.Cheers.

Photography

I started photography in 2008 when I was living and travelling around Europe. My work tends towards long exposure seascapes and cityscapes. In recent years, I've also started practicing street photography.

Civic Nostalgia

This collection is my love letter to the Brutalist style and ethos from the post-war era.► Bold repetitive forms
► Large structural elements
► Raw, unadorned materials
► Utopian roots

Inspired by the cultural and historical heritage of this style in early government buildings, places of higher learning and social housing.The 18 color palettes are named after my favorite Brutalist buildings.220 editions.Each iteration also has an accompanying B-side piece, which you can see on fxhash, by hitting the 'B' key.

This collection was made in Javascript, with the p5.js library. It was released on fxhash in Apr 2024, coinciding with the launch of Warpcast frames support by fxhash.

Kinetics

Kinetics is inspired by a series of 16 sculptures, by Romanian artist Constantin Brâncuși, called Bird in Space. Each piece utilizes long, flowing curves to build up form and texture over time.

This is a mini-collection of 10 animated pieces made for the Generative Advent Calendar event in December 2023. I was one of 24 artists who contributed to this collection. Made with Javascript (and the p5.js and chroma.js libraries) as well as GLSL.
